The
National Association of Abandoned Mine Lands is a non-profit organization
that helps to accomplish common goals and objectives related to
the reclamation of abandoned mine lands. At their annual conferences,
they share the latest in new reclamation techniques and technologies,
and monitor reclamation programs and their funding across the country.
The
committee organizing the AML Conference for 2000 wanted to accentuate
the conference's location, Steamboat Springs, Colorado. It did this
by organizing many outdoor events that took advantage of the location's
wild terrain and natural beauty. Unfortunately, many conferences
are not heavily attended, despite such temptations, so a suite of
conference-related publications was needed that could get potential
conference attendees excited about the event, and prompt them to
register.
Notchcode
emphasized Steamboat's cowboy and ranching heritage by using natural,
uncoated flecked paper stocks and woodcut-style typgraphy common
to 19th-century posters and publications. The logo for the conference
resembled a rodeo belt buckle, and in fact was produced as such
for conference attendees in bronze and silver!
A
"save the date" card, followed by a registration and conference
overview booklet, with a similar conference program produced for
the attendees. The overview booklet cover is shown here. All of
the pieces shared this simple yet striking visual identity, and
produced results; the conference was a success, and many people
commented on the design.
